Major banks had been active in the movie business since its beginnings. When the Great Depressing hit Hollywood, at the same time as a pressing to sound, Chase Manhattan( then called Chase National) and Morgan Guaranty came to rescue. In the fifties, Chase was among the backers of 20th Century Fox in developing the Cinemascope process.
